Slat-mill 101

WHAT IS A SLAT-MILL?

A slat-mill is a non-motorized treadmill specifically designed for dogs. Unlike traditional motorized treadmills, slat-mills operate using a dog’s natural movement. Dogs power the movement themselves, so they have full control over the pace and can stop at any time. The surface consists of slats (often made of wood or plastic) connected by a belt, which rotates on rollers as the dog walks, trots, or runs. The belt moves smoothly, reducing joint strain compared to running on hard surfaces.

Benefits!

Controlled Exercise: Provides a safe environment for high-energy dogs or breeds that require regular activity.

Mental Stimulation: Running or walking on a slat-mill keeps dogs focused and engaged.

Weather/busy schedule/sick-Proof Workouts: Perfect for days when outdoor exercise isn’t feasible due to weather or time constraints. Your busy schedule doesn't align right that day or you're feeling sick!

Behavioral Improvement: Helps reduce boredom, anxiety, and destructive behaviors by expending excess energy.

Tailored Workouts: Owners can customize sessions based on their dog’s age, fitness level, and goals.

Convenience: Slat-mills allow dogs to exercise in a controlled space, minimizing risks like traffic, reactive dogs, or uneven terrain.

Training Tips

Positive Reinforcement: Start with short sessions and use treats or toys to make it a rewarding experience.

Gradual Introduction: Let your dog explore the slat-mill at their own pace. Begin with walking before increasing speed.

Consistency: Regular practice helps dogs gain confidence and associate the slat-mill with positive outcomes.

Supervision: Always monitor your dog during sessions to ensure their safety and comfort.

Who Can Benefit?

Active Breeds: Such as Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, and Cattle Dogs, who thrive with regular, vigorous exercise.

Urban Dogs: Without access to large outdoor spaces.

Dogs in Training: Athletes or working dogs can build endurance and strength on a slat-mill.

Recovery or Rehabilitation: Great for low-impact exercise under veterinary guidance.

A slatmill is a versatile, safe, and effective way to provide exercise and enrichment for your dog, regardless of their energy level or fitness needs. With proper training and supervision, it can become a fun and valuable part of your dog’s routine!
